As a nation, the US has a deep and strong connection to guns. Integrated into the fabric of American society since the country's earliest days, guns remain a pride for many Americans. Whether for hunting, sport shooting, or self-defense, most gun owners consider the right to bear arms to be a central element of their freedom. At the same time, examples of gun violence are shocking the nation, and the debate over gun control remains sharply polarized.

From March 13 to 27 and April 4 to 18, 2017, a national survey of 3,930 American adults was conducted. 1,269 of them owned weapons.
