There is a lot of information about self-defense on the Internet. Some statements are useful tips, but sometimes they turn out to be false. We have compiled a list of myths about self-defense and provided brief explanations to them.

SEVEN MYTHS ABOUT SELF-DEFENSE

1) Call for help loudly enough. The effectiveness of shouting varies depending on the situation. The reality is that in most situations you will only have a few seconds to react. If you are in a crowded place, shouting may be beneficial, but most likely you will have to defend yourself on your own.

2) You need proper training to protect yourself. Although physical training and learning fighting techniques can be useful, it is not the only way to protect yourself. The most effective thing you can do during an attack is to put up physical resistance that will force your attacker to retreat. It does not matter whether you hurt the enemy with fighting techniques, with the help of self-defense weapons or with improvised means.

3) Running away from the aggressor is the best solution. This is useful if you retreat to create distance from an attacker with a knife or other improvised weapon. But in most cases, you will not be faster than the enemy and will not be able to easily escape from him. It is much more effective to first use a self-defense weapon (for example, a stun gun or pepper spray), and then run away.

4) Block the aggressor's attacks. Of course, block attacks if you can, but that shouldn't be your only tactic. It is impossible to win a fight by defending yourself. Instead, make the aggressor worry about your attacks, and that will give you an advantage.

7 myths about self-defense

5) Do not look the aggressor in the eye. There is no universal recommendation in this regard. Sometimes eye contact can really be perceived as a challenge, but also unwillingness to establish it can demonstrate weakness or fear.

6) Use the keys as a weapon. The idea of holding keys in your fist or between your fingers has been around for a long time, and it's better than nothing, but it's not the best self-defense strategy either. You can hurt the opponent or make him slow down, but in a really dangerous situation, your task is to stop the opponent. To do this, a real self–defense weapon will be more effective - for example, an electroshock device.

7) It is most dangerous in unlit deserted places. Although this is an undoubted risk factor, robberies occur right in front of house entrances, inside apartment buildings, on busy streets, and in parking lots. Follow the basic safety rules, keep self-defense equipment at hand, regardless of the place and time of day.
