STUN GUN-BRASS KNUCKLES OSA-008 - CAN IT BE USED?

Is it worth buying a stun gun-knuckles for self-defense?

In the previous article in the "Pseudo stunguns" section, we wrote about the stun gun OSA-1101 Police and OSA-928. In those articles it was shown that the claimed characteristics of these devices do not correspond to their real parameters, and that they are ineffective for self-defense against aggressive people or animals.

We will continue the series of articles by analyzing the information about another stun gun in the form of brass knuckles under the same brand - OSA-008.

Wearing brass knuckles in Russia

We should also talk about brass knuckles: their use as weapons is prohibited.

In Russia, in accordance with Article 6 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation "On Weapons", the circulation of brass knuckles as civilian weapons (that is, weapons intended for use by citizens of the Russian Federation) is prohibited.

In addition, administrative fines can be written out for illegal possession and carrying of the weapons under Article 20.8 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, it is enough, for example, to get caught by the police checking the bags in the subway.

So, the main argument against purchasing this device is its shape and dual purpose in the form of brass knuckles. Self-defense weapons must be legal so that you don't have to take responsibility for justifiably protecting your life.

Chinese stun guns - legality and effectiveness for self-defense

Device specifications stated in online stores:

• Classification - 3rd class (disorientator);
• Voltage - 9,500 kV;
• Dimensions - 11.3 x 9.2 cm;
• Weight - 100 g;
• Built-in flashlight - Yes;
• The number of flashlight operating modes - 1;
• Casing - plastic;
• Power supply - built-in battery;
• Number of electrodes - 2;
• Distance that the discharge can pass through  - 3 cm.

It should be noted that such important characteristics as the power of the device, the distance between the combat electrodes are not specified, there is no information about the battery type and parameters, manufacturer and certification.

Let's analyze the characteristics one by one:

As you know, the parameters of Chinese stun guns are overestimated tens or hundreds of times and are not validated by a certificate of conformity – you should not trust them.

1) Voltage 9,500 kV (9,500 000 Volts) is a completely invented value. Class 1 stun guns have an output voltage of 90,000 volts at the working electrodes, and for police stun guns it is about 120,000 volts. These devices are expensive, made of high-quality materials, and are the result of many years of experience and developments. Cheap Chinese stun guns cannot surpass those that are produced in Russia – and there can be no talk of surpassing them a thousand times in principle.

2) Classification - 3rd class (disorientator) – since this device has not been certified, it has not been assigned any stun gun class. The real effectiveness of such cheap stun guns is extremely low – if you measure its parameters, they will correspond to the lowest, 5th class.

3) Thickness of clothing that the discharge can pass through - 3 cm. This parameter does not depend on the power of the device or other electrical parameters: anyone can determine the thickness of clothing (air) that a stun gun can pass through by measuring the distance between the control electrodes and dividing it by 2. If the distance to the target is greater than the value obtained, then the discharge will pass between the electrodes. According to the photo of the device, it can be concluded that the distance between the electrodes is about 5 mm, which means that it can penetrate about 2.5 mm of clothing. The discharge of OSA-008 stun gun will not pass through thick clothing: jackets, sweaters, and also will not affect the target if the electrodes are not pressed close to it (the air gap should be practically absent with such a small distance between the electrodes).

4) Flashlight. The video shows the operation of a LED, which the seller calls a flashlight. Its brightness is not even enough to illuminate the road in front of you.

Although the frequency of the electroshock discharger is not stated in the technical characteristics, it can be heard and seen on the video that the stun gun is low-frequency, which means it is ineffective in contact use: it will cause a slight painful effect, but will not stop an aggressive opponent.

Considering the price of the device of 1000-1500 rubles, as well as its dimensions (there is little space in the handle and front part), we can confidently say that it uses cheap low-quality components, without protection from damage when it is being used to hit the target.

It should also be noted that if some complex technical device is supposed to be used for striking, its design must protect its electronic components, the stun gun must be made in a shock-resistant case.

CONCLUSIONS

To sum up, the technical characteristics of the OSA-008 stun gun are made up and do not correspond to reality. This device is ineffective as a stun gun for self-defense, and illegal as a brass knuckles (classified as cold weapon).

Low cost, overstated characteristics and shape of the brass knuckles make it attractive to buyers, but we strongly recommend not to buy the OSA-008 stungun.
